What Makes JDM Engines Different

JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market, referring to vehicles and parts originally built for sale in Japan. Because of Japan’s strict vehicle inspection system (shaken), cars there are often retired and exported well before the engine has reached the end of its usable life. That’s a big part of why JDM engines have such a strong reputation — many arrive in the US with surprisingly low mileage for their age.
